Many say we are in a new golden age of television, specifically cable television. With new outlets and potential revenue streams in mobile and VOD, new competitors in Netflix and Amazon and You Tube, abundant creativity, networks willing to take chances and first-rate talent itching to be a part of it, all that was left to put in place was the audience. Happily, the story of the month is the big-hit programming of ad-supported cable. Not one, but several networks developed, produced and aired programming that ate the broadcast networks’ Sunday night dinner in the ratings food chain. There has been a lot of press about AMC’s THE WALKING DEAD and History’s THE BIBLE, but A&E’s DUCK DYNASTY and BATES MOTEL, AMC’s TALKING DEAD, Bravo’s REAL HOUSEWIVES OF ATLANTA, History’s VIKINGS and PAWN STARS, NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS on TNT and TBS, Tru’s HARDCORE PAWN and USA’s PSYCH (and WWE) all drew more than 2 million households in March.
